British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
